In 1960 a corporation was formed called Nova
Graphics, Inc. It was incorporated in the state of New York. The
company was originally setup as a typesetting house that would do
layout and design, setting the type and broker the printing.
In 1969, the owners of Nova were given the chance to purchase a
printing plant from one of their customers. With the opportunity to
do the artwork and printing all under one umbrella, this was an
offer Nova could not turn down, making this a very attractive
proposal to benefit Nova customers. During Labor Day weekend in
1973, an explosion in the building next door, forced the closing of
the building that housed Nova Graphics. Their entire graphics
department had to be moved. With the desire to remain within the
financial district of lower Manhattan, Nova searched for and found a
new home at 161 William Street. Although it was not easy to start
over, Nova was able to rely on the great friends within the printing
industry who helped them through those tough times.
Over the next 10 years, because of the volume of business, the Nova
staff found that it had become arduous traveling between their
Printing Department, which was located on Platt Street and the Art
Department, which was four blocks away on William Street. So, when
Nova's lease was up in 1981, the Printing Department moved to its
present location at 47 Ann Street. That move put Nova's combined
operations just around the corner from one another.
In 1985, David Burns, son of co-owner Barry Burns, joined Nova. He
facilitated the opening of the store front at the Ann Street
location as a copy store. David excelled in this aspect of the
business and within 2 years he was running the entire operation.
In 1988, Lance Burns joined the firm and brought Nova into the
desktop publishing (DTP) age. With the industry changing at such a
rapid pace, price, speed and ease of use made computers the way to
go.
In May of 1995 Barry Burns became the sole owner of Nova. During the
next month, the art department relocated to the same site as the
printing plant. Nova was finally under one roof. In late 1995 both
David and Lance Burns became shareholders and great changes started
to happen. Nova bought new printing presses, expanded the art
department, and streamlined the workflow, which proved a more
efficient and profitable operation. A consultant was employed to
help steer them on the road to success.
In 1998, Nova purchased two Hamada C-248 true two-color printing
presses. In 2000, These presses allowed Nova to grow into a
Heidelberg Speedmaster 52, 4-color, high pile with IR dryers.
In January of that year, Scott Burns, a graduate of The Printing
School of Rochester Institute of Technology, was asked to join the
family business. Scott took over the expanding production area and
worked directly with customers. With Scott on board, the three
brothers now offer very personalized service. They are committed to
excellence.
In 2002, Nova purchased a Presstek Dimension 400 Platesetter. This
device allowed us to eliminate the need for film, developing,
stripping and plate burning. This also reduced the time to produce
plates for all of the printing presses. During the same year, Nova
purchased a Heidelberg Quickmaster 46 2-color printing press. This
press was delivered with an envelope feeder and with IR dryers.
Quality and consistency are maintained on every job produced by
Nova. When Barry started this business 40 years ago, his reputation
was one of the most important assets he had. Barry's integrity was
passed down to his 3 sons creating a level of trade protection
surpassed by none. Nova boasts an 11,000 sq foot facility on the
ground floor at 47 Ann Street in Manhattan. Housed in this shop are
the Heidelberg Speedmaster 4-color, Heidelber Quickmaster 46-2, and
2 multilith 2-color presses. Along with Nova's Press Department,
there is a complete Bindery Department. Within Nova's Art
Department, everything from PC and Macintosh computers, imagesetters
along with a platesetter and color proofing systems including a high
speed DSL Internet connection are available. There is also a full
copy center including a state of the art Canon CLC 1000 color copier
with Colorpass output. From the simplest 1 color through the most
complex multi color jobs, Nova has the equipment and ability to
produce it all.
At Nova, every job is personally inspected by one of the Burns boys
before it leaves the shop in new unmarked cartons. Nova maintains
its own internal messenger staff for immediate job delivery within
Manhattan. Shipping is also available via UPS, FedEx, DHL or
Airborne. If you require, Nova can store your job within its
warehouse and ship on a moments notice anywhere throughout the
country.
With this high quality approach, Nova has recently introduced a time
saving, easy to use customer oriented 4 color pricing wheel (similar
to a proportional wheel, aka stat guide) that takes the pain out of
estimating. This wheel not only gives you a quick estimate but has
suggested retail prices so you can show the wheel your own
customers. This instant pricing system includes combinations of 4/0,
4/1 and 4/4 in quantities from 1,000 to 10,000 on both 80lb and
100lb text or cover, gloss or dull in sizes of 8.5 x 11 or 11 x 17.
With your wheel, you get more than you bargained for.
Included in Nova's comprehensive press kit are "The Wheel", printed
samples of the house sheet which is Zanders Mega paper, order forms,
a resale certificate and a coupon good towards your first order.
These press kits are available now by calling Nova at (212) 349-1233
or on the web at www.novagraphics.com. Just get in touch with Nova
and they will be happy to ship one to your location immediately.
Looking back at the Graphic Arts industry, think of the many changes
that have come about. Nova has transformed itself from a small type
house that started with Varitypers, to being one the prime printing
firms in Manhattan.
Nova strives for excellence in everything. Nova is always looking to
expand. New machinery, from computers through presses and allied
equipment, are in the works. With the emergence of "The Wheel" and
trade protection, what is the answer to that time honored question,
"Where can I outsource my printing?" The answer: Nova Graphics! To
contact any one of the Burns family, please call (212) 349-1233, or
stop by at 47 Ann Street, New York, NY 10038 or email: thewheel@novagraphics.com.
You can also visit them on the web at www.novagraphics.com. The
Burns boys and Nova Graphics look forward to your call.
